The number of identity theft victims is increasing everyday. Yet it is being so downplayed that most people think that it would never happen to them. A lot of people think that identity theft is just a myth propagated by paranoid individuals, well the fact is, it’s not. Identity theft is a crime that can affect anybody from any demographic and that means you could be next. Identity theft awareness is better achieved by using examples of people who have undergone the ordeal of having their identity stolen and used in credit fraud. Below are a few examples of what happened to ordinary people.

Case 1

Subject A and her husband were finally ready to settle down and get a house of their own outside of the city. They contacted a real estate agent and were shown some houses that would suit them and their family. After a long and exhaustive search, the couple finally decided on a home and was assisted by their real estate agent to get pre-approved for a mortgage loan. The couple waited for a response from the credit agency. When they finally got one, they were informed that they have been turned down for approval because a search of the couple’s credit history showed that Subject A had huge amounts of unpaid debts in some states all over the country. Subject A and her husband were baffled because she has never been to the states mentioned in the credit reports. They decided to avail of the assistance of a lawyer and it was found out that Subject A was indeed a victim of Identity Theft and Credit Fraud. They then proceeded to appeal their case to legal courts. The process took a long time and made some financial damage on the family. It took years before the couple was able to apply for a mortgage loan again. They were also made to pay some of the debt acquired in Subject A’s name. To this day, the one behind stealing subject A’s identity was never been found.

Case 2

Subject B was a young accountant who was accepted for a job in New York. He moved from his hometown in Arizona to Manhattan. There he settled in to his new apartment and into the New Yorker’s lifestyle. He was doing great at his job and when the company employees were offered application for new credit cards, he jumped on the chance. He waited for his approval, but he never got it. Instead, he was turned down for a bad credit rating. Unable to explain the event, because as far a he knows he did not owe money to any bank or credit company.

This caused him to get into a deeper investigation and he found out that someone had used his name to get credit loans from several companies in the state of Nevada. He applied for legal action and fortunately for him the authorities were able to catch the culprit and Subject B did not have to pay for the debts made in his name. Still, it has caused the young man a lot of trouble and legal fees.
